It is reported that a Soviet gunboat wlas sunk by Japanese at Manchukuan by gunfir e on the Amur river, with heavy loss of life. i A communique states that three Soviet gunboats opened fire on Japon. se Manchukuan forces, which were obliged to retaliate, Linking one ship, damaging another, and forcing the third to retire. Manchuku-o lias protested 'to the Soviet authorities. A Moscow message states it is uncertain whether the gunboat incident occurred before the ageemenl. to withdraw the forces had been reached. Both parties' have undertaken to ■ensure that the situation will not be : complicated! by unexpected actions. | The Japanese Ambassador stated ! that while the refusal of the Russians to withdraw did not mean war, he wia.£< sure the Soviet would comply. Rumours that ten Russian vessels are converging on Sennufu Island are not confirmed.
