The Rebel vanguard entered the Santander province, and made contact with the Basque troops at Valmaseda, eight miles from the seaport of Castro Urdiales, which is the Insurgents first important! objective. The Basque army at Santander numbers 55,000 well-trained and well-arm-ed, militiamen. Factories are working night and day making munitions, while all able-bodied persons are digging in the trenches.
