LIMIT TO GUARANTEES

COSTS MUST BE REDUCED Government’s Policy Explained U. milton, June 23. “We cannot go on raising the guarI anteed price again and again, but • having once arrived at la fair price Ito pay for dairy produce* we must turn our attention to cutting costs. There are ways in which we can do * this and we are going to devote a j good deci of our time to it.” ' This was the statement -of Hon. W. i Lee Martin, Minister of Agriculture, lat Te Kowhai. Costs, he said, could : be cut by a reduction of the interest irate, rationalisation of methods of •production, lowering ' the price of I manures and by the efficient working I of. the zoning system. Manure prices 1 had already been 1 stabilised to some i extend and something would probabj ly be done to reduce the number of ’ manure-producing factories in the ! country. There were at present only ; two working up to their full capij tai, although output had increased i generally. Something had already been done with zoning in the Waikato, continued Mr Martin, and the zoning principle would prove one of the best things that, bad been done for dairying. The Government did not intend to restrict the Housing Act to towns, but would also build in the country, j Alhopgh this had been investigated lit presented many .difficulties and lhe thought that if that policy was pursued it would do a great deal towards solving the farm labour problem. The main trouble with farm labour was.* not wages or the fact of having to work in the country, but adverse conditions. If men were given good accommodation he felt sure they would work on the farm. . —. .
