FULL TIME WORK
7000 UNEMPLOYED . Hon. Webb’s Assurance The Hon. P. C. Webb, Minister of Mints, received a number of deputations at Westport, and replying to one said the Government intended to find full-time work for four months for 7000 unemployed, fifty of whom ■ would he at Westport, these then reverting to unemployment relief and j another batch being taken on. Mr Webb instanced the need for ■ more elasticity in regard to appren- I ticeships, as it was impossible to ; find employment for unskilled labour j unless there was more in the skilled ’ classes. The Governor-General, Viscount I Galway, with whom Mr Webb is touring, under the direction of Mr D. J. Archer, county chairman, to-day visited Denniston, Granity, Ngakawau and Millerton, making a lengthy inspection of the Wareatea section of the Westport Coal Company's Denniston mines. This was particularly interesting to Lord Galway, as he is one of the directors of .a coal mining company in Britain. He was especially pleased to note the area from which came the coal that saved the Calliope in the great storm at Apia, that strewed the beaches with other vessels no so well fuelled. His Excellency briefly addressed the school children at Denniston, and passing through other .townhips was cheered by children who were drawn up in lines.
