Ronald Howrie, of Manchester, preside n: Gf the Lancashire and Cheshire Federation of Scottish Socle, ies. “The clan system is idle pride and a crippling and ciLmpiug folly,’’ he said at the federal lon s conference at Southport. “It is far <too narrow for a race who have stmt their pioneers and conquerors into every country Lind every -science, art and industry. “Shake off these thackles and let the world see you are no longer a motley collection of quarrelsome clans.’’ To a reporter Mr Howrie added: —“Enmities which should be timeworn are still k'pt up. 1 “The Campbells and the MacDonalds still remember Glencoe. The whole thing breeds silly, pe.ty jealousies, which should be stopped. “Some of th? clans are acting Eke children—a case of ‘I won’t come [ and play in your backyard’—and I v.Ent them to feel ashamed of themselves, and grow up a little.”
