HIGHWAYS COUNCIL

NO. 7 DISTRICT Year’s Work Reviewed The annual meeting of the No. 7 District Highways’ Council was held et Stratford to-day, Mr F. W. Lindup, Distriot Public Works Engineer, presiding. Mr W. Morrison, member of the Highways Board, addressed the meet, ing with reference to the work of the board. He stated .that this year the board had about £4,000,000 to spend, and although it was.about three quarters of a million pounds greater than last year,, he doubted whether it would go very much further. This year £600,000 was to be spent on dangerous rail crossings, which was a big item. Then there was a sum of £25,000 which was set aside for fencing off the most dangerous places on roadsides in accordance with the recommendations of the' Road Safety Council. The Board had £1,800,000 of loan money and they were concerned in providing for interest and sinking fund. Ho-wever, that was a Government policy matter and not the Board’s. If the Board could get all the petrol taxation ' there would be ample revenue. Last year 81,000,000 gallons had been used and in the last two months consumption had shown an increase of 16 per cent. It appeared therefore that at the end of this, year there would be a large indrease in consumption.

Eliminiat.'on of Crossings, The report stated that on the New Plymouth-Hawera State Highway the Department carried out Im. 13chs. of plant mix- bituminous surfacing on the deviation west of the Waiwakaiho River. The Tariki and Waipuku railway crossings are being eliminated by the construction of a deviation and a new bridge over the Waipuku stream. The bulk of the formation, including reinforced concrete culvert extensions and a water drive has been completed. The Midhirst railway crossing is being eliminated by the construction of an overbridge. These works are in progress. The Normanby overbridge, which eliminates Ithe Normanby railway crossing, is nearing completion. Other crossings had been surveyed and in most cases scheme plans, torwarded to the head office for approval. On the Stratford-Taumarunui Main H.ghway the Department has earned out 61 chains of metalling on the Moki tunnei approaches, also 13.75 chains of fencing. 95ft. of ' W a.er drive and -5 chains of formation have been carried out by the Department between Moki and M.angapapa Roads preparatory to metalling. The Department hat. also maintained 47 miles of this Highway between Strathmore and Paparata.
