FIGURES SUBMITTED I i Council Candidates Meeting While recognising that a new Town Hall was required. It would be ridiculous to consider a new building having regard to paet losses, Cr. T. Lawson stated at last night's meeting of the Borough Council. He submitted figures showing that in. the past seven years loss.es had amounted to £473/8/1, and described the present hall as a white elephant. In 1930-31 the loss was £55 2s 9d. and in 1931-32 £lOB/15/11. In 1932-33 there wat a profit of £133/ 15/10. Thereafter thra losses were £92/4/3, £lOl/16/9, £B6/10/11, and | £3l/13/2. Cr. Lawson introduced the subsubject by inquiring from <the Mayor, Mr J. W. McMillan, as to who would beer the cost of hall hire for the meeting when candidates for the council gave addresses. The Mayor admitted that he was responsible for making it a public meeting, but raid he would not do so again under similar circumstances. Cr. H. E. Lawrence: It was for a public purpose. Cr. Lawson: Lt is up to any candidates who wants to propound his policy to hire the hall and pay for it, it not let him get a soap box.
