GROWING UP
WEANING THE FOALS Stratford-Bred Youngsters A number of thoroughbred foals have come, under the notice, of local racing enthusiasts during the Hist tew days, and a representative of the “Central Press" inspected them last week. The particulars concerning the breeding of the youngsters will be interesting to readers. Four of the five, foals are owned by Mr. P. Scown, of Pembroke Road, and had been brought down from his farm and stiabled in Messrs. Newton King Ltd.’s horse bazaar iff Miranda Street with the object of weaning them from their dams.
They fire the first crop of foals from Night Fox (Diacqunbid-Lady Bede), half-brother to Biariscope, winner of the Mitche’lson Cup and three times winner of the Taumarunui Cup, and half-brother of the speedy Gallilee. Both sire and dam were' imported, the sire, a chestnut standing 16 hahds, coming from England, land the dam from Australia,-' If one can judge by the offspring on view, the two fillies selected by Mr. Scbwn to be offered at the Trentham sales next January, should command a good price. The Poumai Family. The first foal to come under review was “Pouma’s Choice,” the name secured by Mr. Scown for the filly by Night. Fox out of Pouma (Cafn.p-fire-Martingaie). This is Pouma’s fourth foal, which is stated by racing men to be the dam’s most promising offspring.
Pouma was bred by the late Mr; A. W. Budge,, of Stratford, for whom she proved a useful winner. Yoma, a full brother, also raced successfully in the. same owner’s- colours (red, white and blue).
Sporting people know Chikara, the first of Pouma’s foals, which is now raced by Mr. Austin Yardley, of Te Awamutu. Chikara, won a race at New Plymouth and. later was second at Hawera and Opunake meetings. Polly Douglas, by Nigger Minstrel, the second foal, won a mile race at Tlakapuna in 1.39 2/5, and subsequently earned second and third honours, and now has- been retired to the stud, having visited Resinous. Lady Pouma, the third foal, owned by Mr. Scown, and now on lease to. Mr G. F. Reid,, of Waverley has not raced yet. Pouma’s Choice much resembles her dam. She is a ligh.tr chestnut, and the white blaze of her dam is more prominent while two white socks„on .the off side back andi front complete a stable picture that promises to ’develop into a valuable asset.
Pouma is again in foal to Night Fox.
Calkenzie (No. 12 Family), is a chestnut filly by Night Fox, out of Royal Divorce-Gay Kathleen, the line running black to the No. 12 Family. Gay Kathleen bred by Mrs. F. McDonald, of Stratford, was half-sistar to Tiptree, and Monaghan, two useful Taranaki gallopers, and halfbrother to Running Shoes, owned by Mr. Scown. Running Shoes racedi twice last year,, but met with an accident, from which, however, he has. recovered and will shortly be put in work again.
Glorified is another handsome bay filly, by Night Fox out of Gay Kathleen, Gazeiey-Kathleetn Mavoureen) and considered ty some judges to be the best shaped foal of the quartet. Night Light, by Night Fox, out of Candle Light (Illumination-Inspira-tion) is.' a dark bay filly, with white star on the forehead'. She is well put together and in splendid ' condition. Clandie Light was bred by Mr. H. Cleland, the well-known Taranaki owner.
