THE TWO OLD BOYS
United Better Than New Plymouth The weather was cold and wet on Saturday when the two Old Boys’ teams met in Victoria Park, Stratford. There was ia small attendance of spectators, who on the whole were disappointed in the game, as they had been led >to anticipate a spectacular display by the much-boomed New Plymouth seniors. On the otner hand, few who were present begrudged United their win, being only the second 'this season, ’.as they made a fine showing in all departments. Their passing movements in particular were much better than their opponents, who were hampered by determined' attacks 'that h id them immovable throughout the day.
United scored four tries. (one converted), 14 points, to Two tries land a penalty goal, 9 points. The teams were:
United (white, blue and gold).— W. Lash; L. Lash, Richardson, O. Ries; McCready, Adlam; Robinson; Bonner, Bowler, Heath, Thomson Murphy, BalsKi, Thompson, O’Keefe.
New Plymouth Old Boys (white). —Johns; Ford, Hoskin, Mclntyre; B. and 1 S Clifford-Jones; F. Uhlenberg; Wheeler; Cleverly, Neville, Wail, Evans, J. Uhlenberg, Rogers, Richardson.
United .confined pl’ay to New Plymouth territory for some minutes. Ries passed infield when he practically had a clear run over the line, and in the scramble Robinson scored well out from the posts. Adlam goal-ed. United 5, New Plymouth 0. New Plymouth held <the advantage and narrowly missed scoring, a long kick going into the dean ball area. Mclntyre missed a pass in. United’s 25, and 'the siege was lifted. New Plymouth backs looked dangerous in passing runs, and worked into United’s 25, but W. Lash kicked ito hlalfway, and play went, to New Plymouth’s 25, mainly due to forward work. McCready made a fine opening and- passed infield to Richardson. The ball was dribbled by the forwards over <he line and Ries grounded. Adlam’s kick failed.
United 8, New Plymouth 0. Continuing «the attack, Bonner got over at the corner, but the kick was. too far for Bowler. United 11, New Plymouth 0. Johns goaled from a penalty kick awarded for a late tackle by Adlam. United 11, New Plymouth 3. Thomson narrowly missed a try near the posts, and New Plymouth forced. The white forwards kept play on .the line, and the ball was kicked into the dead bull area. A good passing ruth by United backs was carried on ;to the line, but two of the attackers (McCready and Richardson) missed grounding, the ball going to the dead area. Pliay remained in neutral territory until half-time, with the score: United 11, New Plymouth 3.
United took the ball in a fine dribbling rush to the corner flag, and Adlam was brought down in front of the posits in a passing run. New Plymouth relieved to half way and the forwards then dribbled over the line, Evans scoring in the scramble, in which Lash was overwhelmed. Johns missed goaling. United 11, New Plymouth 6. In an attack on New Plymouth’s line Robinson fooled the opposition and ran across to score at the corner. Adlam’s kick missed. United 14, New Plymouth 6. New Plymouth rallied and had United near (their line, but were sent back. The white backs operated, buit the United tackling was state.
Mclntyre made a diach down the line and passed to F. Uhlenberg, who scored. Johns missed goaling. Untied 14, New Plymouth 9. Adlam did good work in two attacking* movements, but his passes' failed to improve the position, and United were sent back ito half-wiay. A passing run by the United backs carried play to New Plymouth corner, but the defence held. Play was in neutraj territory until New Plymouth forced with a long kick. Off-eide play by United gave Johns a chance, but th,e kick went outside ‘the posts. Adlam’s kick from pasit half-way went over the line. New Plymouth forced. Final score:— United 14, New Plymouth 9.
