DETAILS OF REPORT
DOMINIONS’ FIRM STAND
Press Associarion —CooyngntLondon, June' 11,
A feature is that the constitutional and legal jurisdictions o“ the r£ce for which the United Kingdom if responsible would render impracticable the adoption of any s'ngle classification in analagous terms such as ’ national” citizen or “member of tho community.”
In the case of other members' of the Commonweilh the report it a
decision not to interfere with tbs' common, staitus of “British subject.” This is a sequel to Australia and New Zealand’s firm stand against an attempt by South Africa tnd Canada to get other Dominions to introduce nationality legislation similar t»~ their own defining nationals or citizens.
The Associated Press lets Lands Messrs Lyons, Cas-y, Bruce and Savage throughout the discussions vigorously opposed, any move which might lead to a weakening of the status as British subjects.
The following conclusions have been reached in the light of the above considerations: Firstly, it is for each member 6f -the British commonwealth to decide which persons have with it the definite connection envisaged in paragraph 73 of the 1.929 report which enables recognition as of its community, it is desirable, however, to secure as far as possible
uniformity in principle in the recognition of such persons in order to avoid inconveniences which might arise if a person belonged to two members of the commonwealth. Constitutional attention has been drawn to the fact indicated in the report of 1929 that British subjects have not only common status' but also, generally speaking, a particular connection with a member of the British commonwealth.
It has been arranged that the final plenary session of the conference shall tak place at St. James’s Palace on Tuesday morning. At this meeting approval will be given the reports of the various committees and the closing p eches will be made.
