Although the savings scheme has only been operating at the Stratford Primary School since December Ithe ■ contributions, on Tuesday had reached £lO2/19/1. To celebrate the achievement of the first £lOO the children were allowed to leave the school at 2.15 p.m. yeslterdiay instead of the usual time, 3.15 p.m. They had been promised "half a half-holiday” or that ■ the flag would be hoisted and natur. ally they voted in favour of a respite from lessons. ( About 150 pupils and depositors at ’ Stratford and the average weekly • banking is £5 14s approximately. Members of the staff act as collec- ! tors and each Tuesday the week’s ■ contribultions are taken to the post office and 'redited to each pupil's individual account. When an account reaches £1 the post office adds Is to it and the deposits bear interest at the usual rate as well. Even then there ,are surplus profits for distribution at intervals to the funds of the schools participating, and not long ago Mr L. J. Furrie, headmaster at Stratford, received 10s to be applied to Ithe purpose of the school’s library ! or sports fund.
