Borough Elections

(To the/Editor). Sir, —Now that 'the Coumjtl by-elec-tion is almost upon us tand a plethora candidates it at hand, one wonders upon what logical principle one can cast his votes. IL appears that the weakness in 4he ■ pres. ent Council is due chiefly to the i fact that the Mayor has a solid block i of inarticulate —but useful—support ; which enables him ‘to put through , whatever he is minded. It appears to me therefore, that what is most j urgently needeed in our local forum is, in Parliamentary parlance, a “s/.rong opposition ” What we need. I believe, are councillors of sturdy independence, with | fighting spirit and some facilT.y in talking. Admittedly it is unusual to find such qualities blended in local aspirants for office. However, in one of the 1 candidates offering this | time we certainly have ‘them. Mr : H. S'. Sinclair is an able and fight- ! ing speaker, and his independence of j judgment is well known. It is inter-

esting to recall Ithat it was he who codimenced the agit/ation which resulted in the Mayor calling a meeting for Monday evening next to en- j able candidates .to express their | view’s. Residents and ratepayers can at ' le'ast do Mr Sinclair and other candi- i dates the courtesy of going Llong to ; hear them on Monday evening next. i There is, 1 understand, no charge for admission, although an excellent ( evening's entertainmen't is guaran. I teed.—l am, etc., , “POPULI VOX.”
