EVENING OF GRIEG MELODIES

Hawera Visitors To Stratford

A delightful evening was.’ afforded members of the Stratford branch of the British Drama Society by members of the Hawera Music Teachers’ i Association last evening at St. Mary’s School. The programme took the form of a dramatic portrayal of part of Ibsen’s great poem, “Peer Gynt," which it set tn music by Grieg. The visitors were the Misses Thom-

son, M Burgess, Reilly, Elliott anu Fairhall, Mrs Bennett and Mr Ackroyd. Mrs Bennett gave a short outline ; of Grieg’s life, Mr Ackroyd sang “The

Sorrowful Minstrel,” and Miss Reilly interpreted “I Love Thee” and “The Swan." Then followed the story of Peer Gynt, interspersed with piano duets and dramatic dialogue .between Peer and hie mother. The story was told by Mrs Bennett, with musical numbers by the Misses Fairhall, Elliott and Reilly. Altogether it was a mast interesting evening, and the music of the celebrated Norwegian composer, who died in 1907, was listened to with delight.

The chairman of the society, Mr J, McAlister, welcomed the visitors, and thanked them for their knowledgeable performance.
