The situation between the administration and local firms is growing rather tense owing to .the taking over of foodstuffs the fdrmdr. The firms definitely do not approve of returning to Rabaul and tare making extensive arrangements to remain at Kokopo fearful of a repetition of S/e eruption, which seemingly is unwarranted. The Rabaul newspaper to-day issued a special evacuation number and urges the people to mark time before a final decision is reached. It is feaa-ed that la man named Els_ worthy perished yesterday while climbing an old crater for the purpose of photographing. Four hundred natives have been engaged by the administration to clean up Rabaul. which is likely to continu e as the capital. Sir Walter Carpenter, according to the Sun, estimates the damage to his company’s property at Rabaul .at £35,(J00, only £lO,OOO of which is not covered by insurance. The damage to shipping is (approximately £25,000, which is covered by marine policies.
