Life On The Island

Press Association —Copyright. Sydney, June 3. A radio message from the solar eclipse party at Canton Island, Phoenix Group, says: "Last evening the officers of the Wellington entertained the officers of the Avocet and the members of the- American and- New Zealand expeditions. The quarterdeck was- dressed for the occasion, which furnished them with an opportunity to meet and exchange views. Th e coronagraph, with covers, a breakwind and a darkroom have been completed. The- coleostat clock has been rated and is working well. Mr I. L. Thomsen takes meteorological observations hourly. These show only a few degrees range in temperature day and night. While Major G. A. Butddl e was blowing specimen eggs at .the edge of a lagoon he was attacked by a sea eel 4ft. long. He scibmbled to safety. Specimens/ have been obtained of fierce land crabs, and we are interested in a large colony pt spectacled: tern near the damps.' The Americans have commenced eclipse drill. The New Zealanders will start doing so to-morrow. We cannot sleep owing to raits arid hermit crabs on -our beds. Some of the Americans ar e sleeping on the roof of the workshop.
