LIKELY CANDIDATES Mr J. Wood To Stand With the approach of the closing day for nominations to fill two vacancies on the Stratford Borough Council, caused by the resignations of Dr. W. P. P. Gordon and Mr R. R. Curtis, there is much speculation concerning likely candidates and a number of names have been mentioned. Mr Janies Wood, when interviewed by the “Central Press” to-day, stated that he had been nominated and he had definitely decided to stand. Mr Wood recently took up residence- in Stratford after farming at Huiroa for a number of years and he is well-known among the farming community of Central Taranaki. He I was president of the Huiroa branch !of the Farmers’ Union and was a [ member of the Stratford sub-provin-i cial executive. Recently he was elect--1 ed president of the New Zealand Farmers’ Council. Mr A. R. Davis Approached. Mr A. R. Davis has been waited I upon by several deputations and askI ed to allow himself to be nominated, j but whesi seen to-day he said that he I had not yet come to any decision, i He said he would like to see experi- ' enced men elected to the council and lif good men came forward he was ! quite prepared to stand down. Mr : Davis is a Justice of the Peace and ■is a life member of the Taranaki ■ Rugby Referees’ Association, and is at present oh the Senior Appointment Board. He is an old Taranaki Rugby ■ representative player and is the j union’s delegate to the Tainui subI union. While contracting and overI seeing for the Clifton County Council he gained experience which should be of value to him as a member of the Borough Council. ; Labour Party Nomination. I On Wednesday night the executive ' committee of the Stratford branch of ' the Labour Party will consider the i nomination of candidates, and it Is understood that two will be chosen.

Nominations close before noon on Friday next, and the election will take place on Tuesday, June 15.
