GENEVA SESSION

A STRANGE SCENE MR W. JORDAN AGAIN British Foreign Secretary Acts As Speech Censor Press Association —Copyright. Geneva, May 30". All Geneva is discussing a strange scene involving Mr Anthony Eden, British Foreign Secretary, and Mr W. J. Jordan, New Zealand delegate, who is reported to have intended to invoke Article X. o£ the Covenant of the League of Nations regarding Spain. While Mr Eden’s speech was being translated into French Mr Eden walked to Mr Jordan and began pointing his pencil to certain passages of Mt Jordan’s speech. Finally several members of the British delegation surrounded them and Mr Jordan was seen making alterations. Mr Jordan then rose to speak and mmade an innocuous plea in favour of moves to secure a cessation of hostilities in Spain.

Mr Jordan and other New Zealanders later declined to discuss the incident.

The League Council adopted' a resolution expressing regret that certain States had not heeded the resolution of December 12 urging them to respect the territorial integrity and independence of Spain, but expressing satisfaction with the progress of non-intervention, urging the withdrawal of non-Spanish combatants and condemning the bombardment of open towns.

“The replies from the Governments in reference to the withdraway of

volunteers vary in temper, but they by no means preclude the possibility of an agreement,” said Mr Eden in his speech.
