MR BALDWIN AT PALACE EARLDOM FROM THE KING Newspapers Pay Tribute To Ideal Premier Press Association —Copyright. (Received 10 a.m.) London, May 28. Sitting well back in a motor car, hatless and smoking a pipe, Mr Stanley Baldwin arrived at the Palace at 9.30 am. and was immediately ushered into the King’s presence. He tendered his resignation and advised his Majesty to commission Mr Neville Chamberlain to form a Cabinet. The King accepted the resignation and the advice. A handful of spectators cheered. Mr Baldwin as he left the palace, carrying their Majesties’ parting gfft—signed photographs. Mr Chamberlain arrived at the Palace later, accompanied by a Scotland Yard man. The has approved an earldom for Mr Baldwin, and Mrs Baldwin becomes a Dame Grand Cross of the British Empire. The newspapers unite in paying tribute to Mr Baldwin. They declare that he made an ideal Prime Minister. and retired when his prestige stood highest. The 'times and the Herald agree that his apparent simplicity disguised the rarest political acumeni. Dominion Prime Ministers join in the tributes. “I regret his retirement,” said Mr Savage. “I found him a man of intense human interests and kindliest disposition. He is a great philosopher and has been a great influence in strengthening British democracy. He clearly expressed the ideals of democracy.” General Hertzog said that the Dominions would always remember Mr Baldwin with the greatest affection. Mr J. Al Lyons said that Mr Baldwin typified much of the best in British character and he had earned the respect of all classes. Mr Baldwin has been appointed a Knight of the Garter. Mr Walter Runciman and Sir John Davidson receive viscountcies, and Sir Geoffrey Storrs Fry, Mr Baldwin’s personal secretary, a K.C.B.
