SCHACHT’S PLEA
FOODSTUFFS SUPPLY GROTESQUE SITUATION OF GERMANY Solution Would Guarantee Peace For Generations Press Association—Copyright Paris, May 27. Five French Cabinet Ministers listened to a speech by Dr. Schacht, German Minister of Economics, at the opening of the German pavilion at the Paris Exhibition to-day. After promising support for improved relations between France and Germany, he again voiced Germany's demand for colonies, saying that its aims were often misunderstood because the fundamental element of German life was insufficiently appreciated. “With the exception of Switzerland, which enjoys an international guarantee, Germany is the only nation in the world not possessing either at home or abroad a source of foodstuffs sufficient to feed the population,” Dr. Schacht said. “This is a grotesque situation. Those seeking to keep up this state of things will never be able to eliminate the risks it has caused. Those contributing to its removal would guarantee peace in Europe and the world for generations.”
