MOTORIST FINED
DRUNK IN CHARGE OF TRUCK Caught By Traffic Inspector At the Strfatford Magistrate's Coui’t Litis morning, before Messrs W. Melnik's and W. L?. Kennedy, J’sJP., a, resident of Ngaere, John Bonner, pteaa-jd guilty to being in charge of a motor truck while in a E'late of intoxication, and was fined £l5 and costs (medical expenses £.l Is). The circumstances of the offence as stated by Constable W. Hughes, were that an 5.45 'p.m, yesterday defendant was driving his motor truck on Mountain Road south, and when auout a mile andi a-half on the El_ tham side of Ngaere tihe Traffic Inspector, Mr E. S. Summers, following behind defendant, noticed -that he was driving an erratic course and stopped him. It was evident that he was intoxicated, and he was taken to the Stratforcii police station and charged with the offence. Constable Hughes added that there was a fair amount of traffic on the road' on account o£ the football match at Hawera, but, for unately, no accident occurred. Defendant admitted that he had had a few beers that day. Defendant was' a respected resident of Ngaere, and had never been in trouble before. Constable Hughes s’aid that personally he felt sorry to find him in trouble of this kind. Defendant had nothing fur her to say, but was. willing to take out a prohibition order against’, himself. He pointed out that a motor .truck was necicsary to him, as' he travelled to outside districts in the couse of his business.
The Bench decided that the license would not be cancelled!.
