AMALGAMATION SCHEME

Councils Protest Press Association—Copyright. Palmerston North, Mliy 24. A meeting of delegates of the Pahia. tua, Eketahuna and Akitio County Councils, of which it is proposed to make one large county under the proposed local body amalgamation scheme, was held at Plahiatua to-day. The Government’s proposal was criticised and the following motion was carried unanimously: “That this conference of delegates of the Akitio, Pahiatua and Eketlahuna County Councils does not approve of the scheme of compulsory amalgamation at' applied to the said counties and as outlined by the Minister of Internal Affairs on the grounds tht.it: (1) No economy would result; (2) efficiency l would suffer; (3) community of interest would be lost. . “Further, that this conference would, however, be prepared to consider any reasonable proposals' ’which will preserve the rights and privileges of the bodie s represented'.”
