South Island v. North Island Press Association —Copyright Dunedin, May 19. South Island and North Island University Rugby teams met on the Carisbrook ground to-day. The ground was heavy and slippery following rain during the past three days, but a fast, open game resulted, South winning by 20 points to 12. South Island dominated the first spell. After .five minutes’ play Berghan, South’s first five-eighths, ran right through the defence to score a good try. Jolly’s kick missed. A fine opening by McCarthy enabled Steele ho outpace the opposition to score behind the posts. Jolly's kick again failed. N«rth attacked and Reid scored near the posts. Bush failed with the kick. South again attacked hotly and (Hadfield scored at the corner. The goal kick failed. McCarthy and Green broke through the defence and the latter scored for the South. Martin ran strongly to add three points to North’s tally. .McAuliffe and Berghan were putting plenty of thrust into South’s attacks and a strong run by Hadfield saw the Canterbury man touch down at the corner. McAuliffe converted. The half-time score was South 17, North 6. The North forwards played much better in the second spell and gave the backs plenty of ball. Sutton, Terry and Burke broke through the defence, Burke scoring. South soon increased their lead, Valentine scoring. Just on time Sutton followed up a long kick to score for North. Bush failed with the kick and the game ended South 20, North 12.
