GISBORNE CENTENARIAN.
! Living- >at Manutuke, near Gisborne', •is Mis Mere Kingi Pa.raone Ra'tapu, a i centenarian, who has lived her whole ilife in the district. Her father was a ; sailor on 'a whaling ship, which lan'dijed in Poverty Bay a little time after ‘ Captain Cook's last visit to New i Zealand. His name was William i Brown. With others, Mr Brown deserted the ship soon after it arrived |in the bay, and went inland. There Ihe lived among the Maoris, and very 'soon he was able to speak their language.
