LOSS OF SCOW

Inquiry Court’s Findings Press Association—Copyright. Wellington, May 16. The Minister of Marine, Hon. F. Fraser, yesterday released a report of the inquiry into the loss of the Scow Rangi in the Hauraki Gulf on January 14, when four men were drowned'. The court found that the present method of survey did not disclose the existence of defective iron fastenings, some of which were embedded in the timbers andi were not capable of being driven out for inspection. Although some of the side fastenings appeared to be in fair condition, some had been greatly weakened by corrosion. The vessel was properly equipped with life.sa.ving equipment but. 'the appliances' were not kept in a lifeboat. Life-saving equipment, was kept in a locker on deck and the locker was washed overboard. The vessel was manned: as- required by law and Was not overloaded.
