..AWATEA LEAVES SYDNEY. The Awatea sailed from Sydney last night for Wellington. CHRISTCHURCH TRAMS. A rate of .1285 d in the £1 on the capital value will be levied by the Christchurch Tramway Board to cover an estimated deficiency of £19,000 for the 1937-38 financial year. This total is about £4OOO lower than the figure rated for in 1936-37. CLAY BIRD SHOOTING. The first New Zealand national Sheet championship will be held at the Hu t Valley Gun Club’s grounds next month. There will be two rounds of 25 birds each under rules of the New Zealand Gun Clubs’ Association as adopted from the National Sheet Shooting Association. Entries will be accepted until the completion of the first round. The contest will be shot over electric release traps with electric delayed: timing. The wellknown gunman, Mr W. Woolven, will be the referee. MEAT EXPORTS In a statement issued by the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board, which met at Wellington yesterday, a complete denial was given of a published allegation that a shortage of shipping space for meat had been due “mainly to lack of reasonable foresight on the part of the Meat Board, whicji Whs the responsibility of arranging shipment from New Zealand.” DAMAGES AWARDED. Damages amounting to £435 17s were awarded by a jury in the Wellington Supreme Court yesterday to Mrs Ethel Mary Erskine, of Lower Hutt, whose husband died from injuries received when he was knocked from a bicycle. The defendants were William Thomas James Morrison, taxi proprietor, and Eric H. Richardson, taxi driver, both of Lower Hutt.
