SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE
NEWLY-CROWNED SOVEREIGN. MR STANLEY BALDWIN’S MESSAGE FROM DOWNING STREET Press Association Copyright. Received May 13, 10.50 a.m. London, May 1 2. Mr Stanley Baldwin, broadcasting to the Empire, said:— “It has been a day of profound emotions, and 1 am now sitting quietly with two or three friends in the Cabinet room at Downing Street, in the heart of London a room which has been occupied by the Prime Ministers of this country for two hundred years. “This morning 1 was in the Abbey. Early this afternoon I was privileged to drive in a procession through miles of London streets. “In the Abbey 1 saw our young King and Queen dedicating their lives to the service of their people, and as 1 said only the other night in the House of Commons—a service that can only be ended by death. "As 1 drove through the streets and saw the crowd eager to see the great newly-crowned King and Queen, and listened to their ringing cheers the kindliest people in the whole world 1 thought that there was only one way in which we can make permanent that impression of what we have seen and heard this day. Let us dedicate afresh if need be ourselves to the service of our fellows a service to our neighbours, our county, our province and country, to the Empire and to the world, not only the service of our lips, but also the service of our Lives, as we know well to be the hope of our King and Queetn, God Bless Them.”
crowns and Coronation robes, . I came on the balcony to be met by a gigantic roar of welcome. Their Majesties bowed repeatedly. There was continued cheering:, Which was again full-throated, when the Princesses wearing their golden coronets, appeared and stood in front of their Majesties and looked over the balcony, Queen Mary, the Duke of Gloucester and the Duke of Kent joined their Majesties, causing further cheering. The Royal Party remained on the balcony five minutes and left during the singing of “For They are Jolly Good Fellows.” When this had been sung the thousands immediately and spontaneously broke out into the National Anthem.
