PROVINCIAL COMMITTEE MEETS Arrangements For 1937 Season Th? operations curing 1936 of the Taranaki provincial ski committee, comprising Alpine Club, the Stratford Mouni.ain. Club and the Moun Egmont Alpine Club, were reviewed at the annual meeting of club d'.'legatee at S ra, ford las»t night. There were present seven members of the StrLtford Club, five from the Mount Egmont Club, and four from the Taranaki Club, Mr R. Syme being in 'the chair. The six h Taranaki championship meeting wa.s held in Snow Valley on September 13, stated the annual report. The terrain w ; ss found to be very sui able for tucii a meeting end the snow on the day was in good condition. Interesting courses were set bu-t by the time racing started a thick mist .spoiled the day from the speca tor s’ point of view as well as causing the racers difficultly in keeping to the right line. Although entries for the men’s events were good there was a poor field in the women’s events The results were:—Men’s slalom, straight race and combined championship, Brian McMillin; women’s slalom, Miss P. Murphy; women’s combined championship, Miss P. Murphy. The junior championships were again conducted' by the 9 ratford Mountain Club. The snow ccndii ions proved difficult for good racing, but keen contests were Results were:—Mem’t s-ku-lom, C. Jury; men’s straight race, J. Murphy; men’s combined championship, C. Jury. Miss Coward won both women’s races and the combined championship. The centre-pieces of the four plaques and two shields were all replaced free of cost and there was now an excellent net of championship trophies.

Taranaki skiers were well represented at the Dominion championships at Ruapehu, where interest in the contests was greater than usual as.' a result of the presence of the members of the Aus ralian team. Misses J. Beale *and P. J. Murphy, and Messrs B. Murphy and Brian McMillan gained places in the New Zealand team and competed against the Australians in the first inter-Domlnion contest.

The most important event of the year was the visit of Mr Colin Wyatt, British ski-jumping champion, to the province in October. He visited each of tlie three clubs and ths main skiing grounds on Egmont. Instruction and demonstrteitiion of ski-jumping were given by Mr Wyatt, who was enthusiastic about the possibilities of developing the sport on the slopes surrounding Rangkoto Flat, Fan. tham’s Peak. Mr Wya t conducted tCLts for the Ski Club of Great Britain and passed the following for the third class: Misses P land J. Murphy and J. M. S. Beale; Messrs 11. A. Snowden, M. B. Shaw, J. D. Murphy, Brian McMillan, J. Carryer, A. W. Whi'e, P. Schweiters and R. D. Sole. Mr Brian McMillan also passed the third class ski jumping test. Mr Wyat/t inspected and approved of

standard test courses on Famtham’s Peak, Ngarara Slopes and Snow Vai. ley. That work, together with the appointment of test judges, would enable other skiers to take the Ski Club of Great Britain tests. The three Taranaki clubs had Ell been accepted as “approved” clubs by the Ski Council of the Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand. The constitution of the executive of the gathering, it was decided, should remain as in past years, com-, prising two members from each of the three constituent clubs. In accordance with a motion passed at the last annual meeting that the Taranaki senior championships be held in rotation in the districts of the three constituent clubs', the fixing of Fantham s Peak as the venue for this year’s championship wia s confirmed. The Stratford Mountain Club will be asked to undertake the control of the provincial junior championships in conjunction with its own junior championship at Ngarara slopes near Manganui Hut on August 11. The championship trophies owned by the committee will be insured, it was decided'. The incoming committee will be re_ commended to consider the purchase of trophies for junior championships. The visitors were entertained at upper by the SWatford Club. ;
