RAID ON CONSULATE
STRONG CHINESE PROTEST Johannesburg Incident Johannesburg, April 7. An application of considerable interest to diplomatic agents and Consular services in the Union of South Africa was heard before Mr. Justice Greenberg in the Rand Division of the Supreme Court, in which an order was granted against the AttorneyGeneral of the Transvaal, on the petition of Mr. Che Leong, the editor of the Chinese Consular Gazette, “Chiao Sheng Pao,” published at Fox Street, Johannesburg, enabling certain evidence to be taken on commission in Nanking from the fbrmer Chinese Consul, Mr. Ping Yuong Lai. The application was the outcome of a raid by several members of the C.I.D. on the premises of the Chinese Consular Gazette, when a quantity of liquor, a portion of the printing press and a revolver were taken by the police. Correspondence took place between the Chinese Consulate and the Department of External Affairs at Pretoria, in which the Consulate protested against this invasion of diplomatic immunty. Compensaton for the damage done was demanded, and the hope was expressed that the officers responsible; fox- “this outrageous act” would be reprimanded.
