ROAD FATALITIES

APRIL FIGURES Transport Department Returns Press Association —Copyright. Wellington, May 10. Fatalities on roads throughout New Zealand during April numbered 17, and 190 persons were injured, according to figures supplied by the Transport Department. Since the road safety campaign was put into operation last September the number of deaths through accidents has declined. From September 1 until the end of April there were 124 deaths, compared with 152 for the previous corresponding period, a decrease of 22.5 per cent., and during the last four months deaths fell from 86 to 77. Decreases have been made in spite of the fact that this year there are 27,500 more vehicles on the roads. Since September 1 the number of persons reported injured amounts to 1225. Figures for fatalities cannot be taken as accurate, for in some cases persons reported as injured have died later. The following is a summary of road accidents since September 1:

Killed. Injured. September ... 5 105 October 14 72 November 5 121 December 20 215 January 15 155 February If) 170 March .. . . , 22 197 April 17 190
