WRESTLING MATCH
The Professionals Don Mctntyrfe and Tommy Mead, who wrestle under the auspices of the Stratford Wrestling Association in the Town Hall on Saturday night, met for the first time in the first bout of the season at Greymouth, the result being a draw, one tall each. Mead, a compactly built wrestler, sft lOJin tall and weighing about 15J stone, is noted for his speed, strength, and matcraft, three of wrestling’s main essentials. In 1932 he was chosen to represent America in the Olympic Games at Los Angeles. He has drawn with two former world’s champions, ■’Strangler'’ Lewis and Dave Levin, and beaten an ex-title-holder, the Turk Ali Baba. Another notable victory was against Sandor Szabo, Hungarian champion, who drew with Earl McCready.
Mclntyre is an unusually big mau and, both in physique and in wrestling style, belongs to the type to which New Zealand audiences have shown themselves partial. His use of the aeroplane spin, combined with a rolling cradle splits and a deadly flying tackle, a reminder of his football days, has enabled him to beat such wrestlers as Lewis, Wayes McLean, Eric "Tor" Johnson, the Swedish giant. Rebel Russell, Sam Leathers, Bill Sledge, and many more. The following amateur bouts have
been arranged:— T. McCulum (Tariki) 9st 21b v. P. Fenton (New Plymouth) 9st. G. Lee (Waipuku) lOst, v. A, Fiddis (New Plymouth) lOst 21b. W. Pitcairn (Cardiff) lOst v. W. Baker (New Plymouth) 9st 131 b. F. Harris (Toko) list 71b v. J. Beasley (New Plymouth) list 81b. A reserve bout to replace any of the four scheduled matches that do not eventuate has been arranged between Lines (Rowan; 9st 61b and T. Rowe (Toko) 9st 31b.
