TOKIO’S MOVE

CORONATION GESTURE Renewal Of Alliance With Britain Press Association —Copyright, Lonndon, May 5. The political correspondent of the Australian Associated Press Agency learns that Japan shortly is submitting td Great Britain, through her Ambassador to London Mr S. Yoshida, concrete proposals for Anglo-Japan-ese co-operation. This represents the first official gesture toward an Anglo-Japanese rapprochement since relations between England and Japan became steadily Worse after the Great War. The attitude of British official quarters is cautious. It has long been realised that Japan is anxious to have a better understanding with Britain and the Dominions, and that she would like the Anglo-Japanese alliance revived. However, # as America would never approve of it, Britain is unlikely to respond. Nevertheless, there is readiness here to go a considerable distance to improve relations, provided Japan is sincere and America does not object. There seems little doubt that Tokio is timing this new gesture to coincide with the Imperial Conference, and especially in view of Australia’s desire to be on the friendliest terms with Japan.
