"Taranaki Central Press” THURSDAY, MAY 6, 197. DOMINION AND EMPIRE.
—o On the eve of landing in England to represent New Zealand at • the Coronation and the Imperial Conference, the Prime Minister I delivered himself of his views on foreign policy. These are unex- | ceptionable, representing the ideal in international relations, the • real difficulty being to apply them to particular cases. That will be the business of the Imperial Conference, the ( leading subject on its order paper being foreign affairs coupled I with defence. The two cannot we’l be separated, each having a ■ vital bearing on the other. Discussing this business, Mr Savage said New Zealand recognised that she played only a small part in the affairs of the Empire, but. nevertheless, would be imbued w ith a sense of responsibility in discussing Empire problems. It is to be hoped that by this Mr Savage intends that New Zealand is prepared to play 'her part, I small though it be, in full. The Dominion as a whole would back i such an assurance with fervour and sincerity. It would express in i real terms the homage and loyalty to the Crown that the Prime I Minister will render in person on behalf of all New Zealand- i ers at the Coronation next week. ' I I It is fitting that the Imperial Conference should be opened two 1 days later, on May 14, thus enabling the Empire’s leaders to trans- 1 late into political terms the fealty they will have offered to His I Britannic Majesty. | A great deal depends on the outcome of these discussions. | There has seldom been a time when it was more necessary for the I British Commonwealth of Nations to stand together and give an i example of what may be achieved by sovereign Governments i when animated by the co-operative spirit. New' Zealand’s status • may be small, but it can be made important, if the Prime Minister I sets out to give a lead in support of the British Government, I which at present is carrying a disproportionately heavy burden of | armaments and responsibility.
