The Duke of Windsor’s sudden decision to leave France this afternoon was made after a telephone conversation with Mrs ■ Simpson. The Duke, keeping his promise ! to make a statement to Press re- ■ presentatives before leaving, ordj ered his Equerry to summon I them. The journalists, hastening in ! the doorway, stumbled over golf clubs, and luggage, piled ready i for departure. The Equerry stated that the i Duke of Windsor had telegraph--led thanking the Austrian Govi eminent, the police, postal of- ■ ficials, and people of all classes ■ for their untiring kindness and i hospitality. ‘ The Duke, who was in excel- ‘ lent spirits, came out to oblige : the Press photographers, with i whom he jested in German, ask- ■ ing where they all came from.
| A message from Salzburg says i that the Duke of Windsor, looki ing fit and happy, accompanied i by his Cairn terrier, departed on ! the Paris express, which, it is : understood, he will leave at i Troyes, continuing his journey to the Chateau De Conde by car. According to a message from Tours, Mr Herman. Rogers, on behalf of Mrs Simpson, says that “there is no statement to make. Mrs Simpson has not planned a celebration for the decree absolute.”
