The completion of the Moscow-Vol-ga canal brings to virtual fruition a scheme to link far-flung parts of Russia by a system of enormous waterways. fHer big rivers have helped in the carrying out of this plan, and the great d.nal linking the Whitp Sea with the Baltic wat itself a giant undertaking. The Volga River has proved of enormous use for a link from the south. At present 675 miles of shallow canal with ancient locks link the Baltic S <a with the Volga River This is being deepened and the locks modern it ed to bring about the time when large cargo vess Is will be able to travel right through the heart of Russia to exchange the products of the Arctic for those of the Black Sea coasts.
