At present 675 miles of shallow canal with ancient locks link the Baltic S <a with the Volga River This is being deepened and the locks modern it ed to bring about the time when large cargo vess Is will be able to travel right through the heart of Russia to exchange the products of the Arctic for those of the Black Sea coasts.
