All 'three sea-going vessels of Lhe New Z aland division of the Royal Navy are to leave Auckland within the next few weeks to nilake their annua*! winter cruises to the Pacific islands. The sloop Wellington nvill sail on May 4 and return on August 3, the Leith will leave on .Tune 7 and return on September 18, and the flagship Achilles will leave on her first cruise away from Nev Zealand since she hag been on the station on June 12. In addition to undertaking her usual putrol duties, the Wellington is to take a party of scientists io Canton Island, in the Phoenix Group, for the purpose of observing an eclipse of the sun. The expedition is to.be led by Mr C. B. Michie, Kaitaia, and will arrive ait the island on May 26. Special instruments are being taken by tibe party, and it is exp. irted important data will be obtained from observing the total eclipse which will be seen only from the Phoenix Islands.
