LAND AGENTS BUSY.

AUCKLAND WORKING MEN BUY HOMES. Fear Government Rents May Be Too High. Auckland, April 23. After a lull ascribed in part to a wai.-and-ses at itude of a section of the 'public toward -the Government’;-. Housing sch me, land agents state chat there is now considerable buying and selling of house proper y and even some business in sections, -.he most striking transactions in the last category being the purchase of just over -v'. o acres at St. Hellers, at well over £3OOO. * One man said that his experience was that the heavi st volume of business was in proper.ies -at prices, from £l2OO to £2OOO. Another man said he had done remarkable business in houses from £4OO <0 £BOO, with deposits ranging from £5O to £l5O. Th re was no disputing the fact that a big demand had set. in from working men for cheap homes, said an agent. It was his experience -.hat many of these purchasers had been awaiting details of th? Government’s housing scheme before coming to the conclusion to buy 'th ir own homes. They had decided, rightly or wrongly, that the re-n s would be high so they had decid d to purchase. However, while much of the demand appears to be centred, first, on working men’s homes, and, secondly, on houses of fairly modern construction lunging in price from £l2OO to £2OOO, th re have also been some sales, at much higher figures. For example, Mr Justice Callan has just purchased a property in St S- ephen’s Avenue at about £6OOO. Then an--0 her property has changed bunds in R -muera Road at a price between £3500 and £4OOO. Another agent found most of his. business ranged in houses at prices between £5OO and £l6OO.
