TRADE WITH GERMANY

TENTATIVE AGREEMENT REACHED. HON. W. NASH AT FOREIGN OFFICE IN BERLIN. PLAN MAY BE FINALISED BEFORE JUNE. > (Press Association—Copyright.) Received 1 I a.m. BERLIN, April 22. Negotiations have been begun between New Zealand and Germany for a trade and transfer agreement on the lines of those that have been concluded with other British Dominions. According to a London message, the Berlin correspondent of the Australian Associated Press says that on the eve of his visit to Moscow, Hon. W. Nash, New Zealand Minister of Marketing, revealed that he spent Monday and Tuesday in discussions with the Foreign Office on the question of a trade agreement, and also took luncheon with Dr. H. G. H. Schacht, German Minister of Economics. Mr. Nash, in an interview, said: “A tentative agreement has been reached, and will probably be finalised before I leave London in June. The main object is to increase two-way trade. If the plan succeeds trade should at least be doubled. “The agreement, in principle, closely resembles the Ger-man-Canadian agreement, but there are stronger safeguards for New Zealand.” “Provision has been made to prevent any appreciable trade balance arising in favour of either side.” Leading men asked Mr. Nash for his views on the international situation. Mr. Nash told them that if Germany showed that she was disposed to use her regained freedom to collaborate in the maintenance of the peace of the world, the world would be on their side, but if she was not the outlook was dark indeed. Mr. Nash had a long interview with a representative of the largest German buyer of New Zealand wool. He also interviewed the Director of the German Dyestuffs Corporation. The New Zealanders, before their departure for Moscow, were entertained by representatives of the German Ministries at dinner at the Hotel Kaiserhof.
