President Roosevelt in a message to Congress today asked for £3,00.0,000 for the yeur 1937-38 'for relief. It is estimated that the Treasury deficit at June 30 will be £510,000,000, while the deficit, at June 30, 1938, is estimated at £84,000,000, Th© President pledged that every means at his disposal would be used to eliminate a deficit in 1938. The public debt next June will reach £7,100,000,000. fntimiating that nebs' taxation would be necessary, the. President said: “It is a ma't-ter of common knowledge that the principal danger for modern civilisation lies in those nations which, largely because of an armament race, -are headed directly toward bankruptcy. The proportion of the Government income the Uniteid States is spending on armaments is far smaller than that of the nations referred to.”
