CHINA AWAKENING.
O University Extension. Sydney, April 11.1 Mr F. E. Godden, an art dealer, of Mel! ourn , who arrived in Sydney on return from a visit to China by the Taiping yesterday, said he was greatly impressed by the evidence lie saw of th? awakening of China. The University of Canton, in, his opinion, was already much greater in every way than any Australian university, and the Government had rantiouced that a. further 30,000,000 dollars (about £1.800,000) would be granted to it. The Government previously had granted a similar sum 'to the universi y. Another marked feature of Chinese progress', Mr Godden added, wias the extensive slum clearance, town planning, and rebuilding schemes iww being carried ou‘t, notably in Canton and other big cities. ,
