NEGLIGENT CYCLIST.

First Prosecution Under New Regulations

For negl'gently riding a push bicycl~, George Charles Neilson was convicted and fined 10/- in the Strat. ford Court to-diay. Sergeant T. Brenchley said the case vas. the first in the district under the new regulations, which provided that a cyclist should exercise the same precautions as a motor vehicle driver. The circumstances as outlined by the tergeant showed that Neilson, when cycling along the East Road, crossed in front of a car driven by Mr. I’. T. Aitken and was knocked down by the car. He did not think that many cyclists were aware that they were subject to the same regulations as motor drivers, said Mr. N. 11. Moss, who appeared for defendant. It was rather puzzling why the unfortunate cyclist wa s picked on, as he did not contribute -to the accident. Defendant's bicycle had been smashed and he had been laid up for three weeks, Mr. Moss said in asking for a light penalty. In fixing the penalty Mr. W. H. Woodward, SM„ remarked that the Act provided for a maximum fine of £5O.
