Listen to the voice of authority on the subject of foul pipes. Writing in the British Medical Journal, Sir Robert Jones says: “Most of the harm arising from tobacco is due to the smoking of foul pipes.” And what is the main cause of pipes becoming foul? The use of tobacco heavily charged with nicotine; brands like that it is which lead to heart and nerve trouble, although the smoker may not realise this until the state of his health causes him to interview his doctor. Happily cases of the kind are less common in New Zealand than was formerly the case, and this is undoubtedly due to the now almost universal use of toasted New Zealand tobacco—unquestionably the purest on the market, because toasting rids it of excess of nicotine so effectively that the risk is reduced to a minimum.
