COUNCIL REPORTS. Gleanings From the Monthly Meeting. BETTER MEAT. The abattoir manager. Mr R. Jenkins. reported to last night’s council meeting as follows: “The quality of the stock slaughtered during the year has shown a marked improvement. The cattle killed have been mostly young dairy cows of good quality with a good percentage of run heifers, mostly Poll and heifers. With few exceptions, the old type of boner cow is seldom brought in for slaughtering for shop use. The sheep killed have been of a high quality, being mostly young fat ewes, with a goodly number of fat hoggets and wethers. Pigs and calves killed have been in good condition and suitable for shop use.’’ LICENSE FEES. A total of £176/15/J1 was collected in license fees for. the month, heavy traffic producing £l4B/12/11, building and drainage £27/8/-, and sundries 15/-. TRAFFIC WELL CONTROLLED. Inspector P. C. Watson, of Wellington. who visited Stratford this month in connection with race traffic control, complimented Inspector Sayers on his supervision of traffic within the borough. HOUSING SCHEME. The report of the finance committee contained the following resolution in connection with the Government housing scheme: “That the Town Clerk write to Mr. J.’ A. Lee, Undersecretary in charge of Housing Construction, and ascertain the cost of. the houses being built by the Government, as well as any proposals in mind regarding Stratford.”

QUEEN VICTORIA JUBILEE. j-j Information relative to the history of trees planted in the Stratford, parks in commemoration of Queen Victoria’s Jubilee is being sought by the Domain Board, and a member of the board (Mr. G. D. Hunter) has been asked to assist. CORONATION SERVICE. A special service in connection with the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth would be held at Holy Trinity Church on Sunday. May 3, advised the Rev. K. J. McFarland. His Worship the Mayor theif wives, were invited to attend, and members of the council, with DAMAGE IN THE PARKS. The Domain Board has decided to ask the Police Department to give the parks a little attention. ELECTRICAL MATTERS. The bulk supply for the month of March was maintained at a good level and the voltage regulator, recently metailed. is doing good work. A start has been made with the work in connection with the improvement to- reticulation. The general condition of lines arfd plant, reported the electri- . cal inspector. Mr. A. E. Pollock, is very satisfactory. The street light in Ariel Street south cost £B/4/3. The peak k.v.a. was 485. compared to 513 for the Corresponding month last year, being a decrease of 24. The gross revenue received in February was £l3lB (in February, 1936, £1257). YEAR’S LICENSE FEES. During the year ending March 31, the sum of £1264/1/3 was collected in license-fees, as follows:—Heavy traffic, £571/2/-; vehicles, £35/10/-; dangerous goods, £6O; kerbside pumps. £B2/10/-: under Health. £22 12/6; billiard rooms. £l6; public halls, £l9; building permits. £152 10/-; ex. water (buildings), £23/6/9; drainage, £BO/10/-; inspection fees, £8: sundries, £1; drivers' licenses (781), £192. RANGER'S DUTIES. One cow was impounded and two dogs destroyed by the ranger, Mr. H. Dixon, during the month. OFFENDERS WARNED. During the past month, reports Inspector Sayers, 15 motorists were stopped for speeding through the borough; nine children were warned for riding bicycles in a negligent manner in Broadway; 13 children were caught riding bicycles on the footpath during holidays; and nine motorists were stopped for faulty headlight.
