DECREASE IN KILLING Meat Supplies From Other Sources. A remarkable decrease in the amount of stock slaughtered at the Stratford abattoirs during the year ended March 31, compared to the figures for the previous twelve months, was revealed in the report of the manager, Mr. R. Jenkins, before last night’s meeting of the Borough Council. With the exception of the number of cows, in which there was an, increase of 75, the figures referring to all other classes of stock slaughtered were less, sheep showing a decrease of 435, pigs 258, heifers 121, lambs 59, calves 18, and ‘oxen 12. Tripes prepared decreased by 101, and there was a decrease of £93/10/9 in theslaughtering fees for the year. A comparison of the respective figures. with the previous year given in parentheses, shows: Cows, 1620 (1545); heifers. 483 (609); oxen. 38 (50); calves. 52 (70); sheep, 3498 (3933); lambs, 232 (291): pigs, 650 (90S). Mr. Jenkins reported as follows: “The reason for this decrease I attribute to the large amount of meat coming into town from the freezing works, and also from farmers killing on the farms c-nd selling the meat in the towns. ’ Councillor C. R. Finnerty remarked that the amount of meat coming into the town was growing tremendously. He did not know what could be done. The Mayor, Mr. J. W. McMillan: You cannot do anything.
