The utilisation of the Dominion's forest products for posts, cases and general home building lies behind the recent announcement that the Government intends to erect two mills m the Rotorua district. iln|t«rviewed tei-day, the Commit 1 - sioner of State Forests, Hon. The extent to which milling would be developed depended on the state of the market. “What I have had in mind was the State Forest Service being prepared to utilise o'ur forest products," said the commissioner. “Forests at Rotorua are reaching the stage when a lot of trees are ready for extraction. We have to consider the management of thinnings so itha't they can render possible KU"' maximum annoifn') of growth without injury to the trees and the utilisation of those trees that are ready for thinning and should coma out for various products such as fruit cases, boxes and requirements of the sort. It has tak'en a good deal of planning to establish a plan that 'Will meet those requirements.” Reftfring to posts for farmers’ requirements, Mr Langstone said that up to 'the pi'esent farmers had to rely on durable timbers such as tolara and silver pine, but it had been Known for years that through creosoting even soft wood pines could be made very durable. He was hoping to establish several creosote plants so that a lot of thinnings could be treated.
