STRIKE DISPUTE.
CONFERENCE FAILS. Ontario Premier’s Stand. Press Association —‘Copyright. New York, April 18. A mast 1 meeting, of Oshawa strikers i to-day accepted the proposal of the | General Motors Corporation for the | resumption of peace negotiations I without the attendance of officials of the Committee o£ Industrial Organisation. The conference, however, broke down. It was planned to hold the conference at the office of Mr Mitchel: Hepburn, the Premier of On ario, during the day, Mr Millard, president of the local union, and Mr Cohen, h anion’s attorney, to represent the strikers. All partits predicted a speedy settlement. AJi>r two hours of ifj liberation ; and when the strike was on the verge of settlement, Mr Hepburn disbanded j the conference, alleging that M I Cohen refused to sign a statement I specifically declaring he and Mr ? Millard represented the local union only and Were not instructed by the C. 1.0. The Premier said the company was prepared to re-open the plant to-morrow and make reasonable concessions in wages, hours' and conditions, and he appealed to the strikers to choose their true repre- I sentatives. The Automobile Workers’ Union, immediately served notice on the company that it would order a walkout of 110,000 employees of General Motors in the United. State s unless it settles the strike at Oshawa. The union claims'that the company violated the United States agreement, which provided, that the company would r ogui;. the union in Canada as well -a- s that in tile Uni ed States.
