Hon. D. G. Sullivan. Minister of Industries and Commerce, left last night for Christchurch to open the annual conference of the Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s Association there to-day. Dr. H. W. Jack, Director of Agriculture for Fiji, arrived at Wellington from Auckland yesterday. Sergeant T. Brenchley, of New Plymouth, is in charge of the S. ratford Police Station during the absence of Sergeant C. M. Annis, c|n annual leave. Major A. Purvis, military secretary to the Governor-General, Viscount Galway, left Wellington for the South Island by the steamer express last night. Mr.v C. G. C. Dermer, chairman of the Power Bohrd, I and Mrs. Dermer, left Auckland by the Awatea for Sydney on the first stage of a holiday trip to England. I Rev. A. H. Scrivin, General Secrel tary of Foreign Missions in the New j Zealand Methodist Church, left by I the express this morning for Wellingi ton after a short visit to Stratford, { in the course of a tour of Taranaki. Mr. F. Eggleton, formerly of the London headquarters staff of Thos. I Cook and Son, is touring New Zea- ; ' land. He arrived in Australia via j I Japan, and will return to England by I i the Ruahine. • Mr. ,R. I. Allan has been appointed ( ; Government representative on the I Post and Telegraph Department’s ' Board of Appeal. Mr. Allan retired ' from the department last December ; after 42 years’ service, during eleven ! of which he occupied the position of I inspector. I Captain J. Corbett-Scott, of Epsom, i Auckland, yesterday celebrated his i 99th birthday. He is the last surI vivor of the band of Pukekohe settlers who conducted a gallant defence of the East Pukekohe Church against a force of over 300 Maoris. He was born in Cornwall, and came to New Zealand with his parents when he was 20 years old. Dr. J. Catarinich, the newly-appoint-ed Director of Mental Hygiene for Victoria, who is visiting New ZeaI land to study methods used in the I treatment of patients in mental hos- ■ pitals, left Wellington by the Limited last night for Auckland, where he is to visit the mental hospital at Kingseat. He was accompanied by Dr. T. C. Gray, Director-General of the Mental Hospitals Department.
