Challenge to Church. Press Association—Copyright. Hamilton, April 15. Reference to the report of the committee set up by the Government to inquire into the incidence of abortion in New Zealand was made by Archbishop Averill *at the General Synod of the Anglican Churnh. The Primate said he # expected that he members of Synod had read the terrible report with consternation. The report seemed to him to be a challenge to the Church to take some notice or action as far as could be done. The Mothers’ Union might con. sider the iwa.tter. I't would' be evidence of indiffer, ence, apathy, or even cowardice, if Synod refused to consider the report. Archbishop Averill said the commission deserved congratulations for investigating the problem so thoroughly, and for exhibiting the mo’ral courage it did in putting the Tru'lh before the public. He suggested that the question should be referred to the social service committee for consideration, but no motion was put..
