Two negroes were tortured and lynched by a mob of 100 white men tii Winona, Mississipi, to-day, two hours.' aSter they bad pleaded not guilty in a Circuit Count to a charge of murdering a white storekeeper. Both were tied to stakes and dorlured with tire flame of a- blowtorch. One died at the stake, and the other was shat -dead alter torture <and the body burned. A third negro who was suspected of complicity in the murder was severely whipped and chased from the county. The first two v/ere .taken from Sheriff Wright and two deputies as they were leaving the coufiJlbuse en route for the jail. They were placed in a motor-bus and driven to the scene of the murder, where they were tortured. Members of the mob sized the sheriff officers from behind when eajturing ithe negroes, s>a.ye a lalter message. They pinioned the officer’s arms until the bus had departed. Sheriff Wright said that the negro Who died at the stake had previously confessed ’to the murder.
