THE DAVIS CUP.

THE EUROPEAN ZONE. South Africa May Meet New Zealand. DATES FOR CONCLUSION OF ROUNDS. Ths 12 matches set down for decision in the first and second rounds of the Davis Cup European Zone will be as follow: First Round. (1) Belgium, Hungary. (2) Switzerland, Ireland. (3) South Africa, Netherlands. (1) China, New Zealand. Second Round. (5) Italy, Monaca. (6) Germany, Austria. (7) Sweden, . Greece. Jf(8) Winner of 1. ■ Winner of 2. f (9) Winner 3, Winner 4. (10) Jugoslavia, Roumania. (11) Poland, Czechoslovakia. (12) France, Norway. In the third round the winner of 5 meets winner of 6; winner of 7 meets winner of 8; winner of 9 meets winner of 10; winner of 11 meets winner of 12. The first round of the competition must be completed by May 4, the second by May 16, the third by June 8, the European zone semi-finals by June 17, and the finals of the two zones, European and American, by July 12. The inter-zone final will be played on July 17, 19 and 20, and the challenge round on the centre courts at Wimbledon on July 24, 26 and 27. From the draw it will be seen that the European zone is somewhat lopsided, as Germany ha.; a fairly easy task in the top half, where Italy can be regarded as the only strong threat, while the bottom half is charged with strong teams like Jugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, France and South Africa. The South Africans will travel to Holland for their first match, which they shoud win, and the probability is that they will then have to play New Zealand in England. It will be one of the surprises of the tournament if they fail to get by the New Zealanders (says the Rand Daily Mail), and if they do progress into the third round they will most likely have to meet the Jugoslavs. In the American zone the United States meet Japan and Australia play Mexico. Here it is a question whether the United States or Australia will qualify to meet the winners of the European zone for the right to challenge Great Britain tor the possession of the Davis Cup.
