MIDHIRST BEAT OLD BOYS
(Scoring 17 points to their opponents 3, Midhirst were definitely superior in the first junior match with Stratford | United Old Boys. While it. was a non- j ( competition game, the match was | hardly contested and for iboth teams i I it was a good preparation for the Cen- ■ I tral Division fixtures. Midhirst made | the game open and it was evident that | | the team this year will be a strong one, particularly in the back division. At the end of the first spell Midhirst led by 14 points to nil, but in the second spell they were able to add only another three points. Old Boys were a comparatively light team with most of the backs recruited from last year’s third-grade players, and the team did well in checking the Midhirst scoring. Tries were scored for Midhirst by Ross (2) and Hunwick, Boniface converting two of the tries. Cookson potted a goal. Old Boys’ points came from a penalty kick by Goodman. Mr. A. G. Beal was referee. DAN O’BRIEN SHIELD. TUkapa won the Dan O'Brien Shield competition at Pukekura Pavk, New Plymouth, by 22 points to Star’s 8 points. The superiority of the Tukapa backs wa» mainly responsible for the good score. CARBINE SHIELD.
